A cataract is a clouding of your eye’s normally clear lens. This clouding of the natural lens happens over time and sometimes may be due to an injury or medications. A cataract can be the reason images appear blurred, colors aren’t as sharp, glare at night, or feeling you need more light to read. It may also be the reason that your glasses no longer seem to work for you and changing your glasses does not help.
HOW DOES CATARACT SURGERY WORK?
- As we get older and due to certain medications/trauma, the lens in the eye can become cloudy, resulting in decreased vision.
- We will check to see how much the cataract is affecting your vision.
- If your vision is affected to a level that cataract surgery would be safely beneficial, your physician will discuss the treatment in detail.
- Using advanced surgical techniques, we are able to remove the old cloudy lens and implant a new lens that is good for the rest of your life.
Cataract Lens Options
Below is a basic explanation of the lens options we provide. Not only will the doctor discuss these with you at your visit, but our Surgical Coordinator will go over them in depth if you proceed with surgery.
Standard
Monofocal – A standard lens that will replace your clouded natural lens. This lens will still require you to wear glasses, as it only corrects one aspect of your vision. This normally corrects distance vision, so this will typically require you to wear readers for near vision. If you have an astigmatism you will need to wear glasses full time, or you may want to consider one of the upgraded lenses. This lens is covered by most insurances.
Upgraded
Toric – An upgraded lens that will replace your clouded natural lens. This lens will correct distance vision only. This lens will still require you to wear glasses, which is typically just readers for near vision. This lens is not covered by insurances.
Vivity – An upgraded lens that will replace your clouded natural lens. This lens will reduce your dependency on glasses. This lens will give you clear vision at arms length away (i.e., computer screen, mirror, menus) and through to distance (driving, watching TV, recognizing people at a far). This lens can correct astigmatism. This lens is not covered by insurances.
Panoptix – An upgraded lens that will replace your clouded natural lens. This lens will reduce your dependency on glasses. This lens will give you clear vision at arms length away (i.e., computer screen, mirror, menus) and through to distance (driving, watching TV, recognizing people at a far). This lens may provide clearer near vision than Vivity. This lens can correct astigmatism. This lens is not covered by insurances.
Apthera – An upgraded lens that will replace your clouded natural lens. Provides monofocal-like distance vision as well as intermediate and near for everyday activities. This lens is not covered by insurances.
