The overall health of the eye is dependent on the eyelid. Skin cancer can affect the delicate eyelid tissues and often requires surgical removal. Removal of eyelid tumors leaves missing area of eyelid tissue. Dr. Pao’s training in both ophthalmology and oculofacial plastics allows her to customize her approach to achieve superior functional and aesthetic results. Even if the entire eyelid is affected by the tumor, our oculoplastic surgeon is capable of reconstructing the eyelid to preserve its function and protect the eye while making you look like yourself again.

Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

As we age, the tissues around the eyes begin to droop. The eyebrow descends and the skin of the eyelids becomes loose, becoming redundant and allowing the normal underlying fat to prolapse forward.

  • removing excess eyelid skin
  • sculpting and contouring eyelid rat to remove bags
  • restoring the eyebrow to its natural position

Eyelid Malpositions

Dermatochalasis

Excessive, puffy or lax skin around eyelids that can cause impairment of vision. Surgery can correct this, and involves making an incision in your natural upper eyelid crease or below the lash line in the lower eyelid. Excessive fat, lax muscles and skin can be removed and/or repositioned during surgery.

We are able to treat these symptoms with eyedrops or ointment, as well as a special contact lens that reduces pain and encourages healing.

Ptosis

Drooping of the upper eyelid(s) which may interfere with your vision. Patients with ptosis have difficulty keeping their eyelids open causing them to raise their eyebrows or turn their chin upwards to see clearly. There are different ways to approach ptosis depending on the cause and the amount of ptosis present. The goal of ptosis surgery is to elevate the eyelid to allow a full field of vision and to achieve symmetry with the opposite upper eyelid with a natural contour.

Ectropion

A common condition in which the eyelid is rolled outwards or sagging away from the eye. This is often due to aging and weakening of the tissues around the eye. Other causes include facial nerve paralysis (Bell’s palsy, stroke, trauma, scarring, previous surgery, and benign/malignant cancers of the skin. This can lead to tearing, mucous discharge, recurrent infections, crusting, sandy or gritty sensations, and chronic irritation. Repair surgically and should be repaired to prevent permanent damage to the eye.

Entropion

A common condition in which the eyelid is rolled inward toward the eye. This is often due to aging and weakening of eyelid muscles . Other causes of entropion include trauma, scarring, previous surgery or congenital entropion. This can lead to the eyelashes rubbing against the eye causing tearing, sensivitiy to light, mucous discharge, recurrent infections or even corneal abrasions and ulcers. there are different approaches to correcting entropion depending on the amout of entropion present. Entropion should be repaired as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage to the eye.
